Talent Retention Strategies: The Growth of Flexible Work Arrangements in Law Firms

Carol Crawford

Our daily work brings us into conversations with law firm leaders and the legal professionals charged with hiring, marketing, training and retaining legal talent within law firms across the U.S. and Canada.  We’ve seen and heard that the improved economic outlook and a tighter job market make talent retention strategies a topic worthy of our combined attention. The firms who take a proactive early-adopter strategy to strengthen their employee value proposition will reap the benefits in the war for talent.

At the top of the list of retention strategies valued by employees is flexible work arrangements.  In a recent survey conducted by the Society for Human Resources Management, about 60% of organizations reported that flexible work, along with health care, professional and career development and retirement savings will increase in importance over the next 3-5 years.  At a recent gathering of legal HR professionals in Atlanta, about half of the firms represented indicated they have a formal flexible or alternative work arrangement policy; most of the other firms represented indicated they were either evaluating adopting a formal policy or considered flexible work arrangements on a case-by-case basis.

Given the increased frequency of employees currently in or seeking a flexible work arrangement, we are now gathering data to help clients, candidates and industry colleagues to better understand the marketplace and prepare for the workplace of tomorrow.  We invite you to participate in our anonymous Flexible Work Arrangements survey before March 31, 2017, the results of which will be published on our website.
